Emerald Psychology Groups are facilitated by experienced psychologists. The groups have been developed to provide a safe place to explore personal difficulties. Group therapy is similar to individual therapy in that people are supported to overcome personal difficulties. The group environment provides an opportunity to share experiences, build connections and to gain peer support.

We offer mindfulness based groups aimed at improving functioning with regard to a range of common challenges. Attending a regular group provides benefits of developing new skills as well as gaining acceptance, support, knowledge, and encouragement from others that experience similar challenges. Groups are a combination of providing information, practicing skills and sharing experiences. For each group, you will have the opportunity to discuss how the group may meet your needs with a Psychologist prior to the first session.
Mindfulness is a process of bringing our awareness to the present moment. Mindfulness in the form of cognitive behaviour therapy has been shown to be effective in a wide range of clinical disorders, such as chronic pain, anxiety disorders, depression, PTSD, OCD, substance abuse, and borderline personality disorder. It is also demonstrated to improve performance in a variety of tasks. Some therapy models that are mindfulness focused are Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) and Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT).
The Mindful Eating Group is a program for people experiencing difficulties with their eating behaviour. It caters for people experiencing stress related eating, emotional eating, disordered eating and obesity. Through mindfulness training, this group will help people have an awareness of what the body needs, enjoyment of food without overeating, and address struggles with difficult emotions that can be associated with eating, such as deprivation and guilt.
Participation in a Mindful Parenting Group aims to improve the experience of parenting. Mindfulness approaches assist with being tuned in to children’s needs as well as attending to the parent’s own needs. They are helpful to find more effective approaches to manage difficult behaviours. Techniques include assisting parents to find a balance in helping their children manage their emotions and behaviour, and providing a secure base for them to explore their world.
This Stress and Anxiety Management Group will utilise Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT) techniques to develop stress management and anxiety management skills and develop resilience. Skills taught include a focus on relaxation, managing difficult thoughts, facing fears, and using mindfulness techniques to develop awareness and respond to identified needs effectively.
This Effective Emotions Group aims to use mindfulness-based skills to experience emotions in a helpful way rather than becoming overwhelmed by them. It will help to develop an awareness of emotional states and identify effective responses to these states. The group looks at the function of emotions and how emotions help us to meet our needs. There will be a focus on learning strategies to prioritise goals and manage relationships effectively. These groups will involve some learning and discussion about the skills, some skills practice within sessions, and time to discuss the practice of skills in everyday life.
Bereavement is one of life’s most difficult experiences. It can be a frightening, confusing and very emotional time. In response to an expressed community need, the Emerald Psychology Practice is pleased to offer a Grief and Loss Group to anyone impacted by grief. The sessions will be partially ‘unstructured’ meaning group members will be able to share and process individual experiences and partially ‘structured’ where our experienced Group Facilitator will be able to provide some education and context around grief and loss. This will be a closed group so once the group is formed, it will remain the same for the duration of the group.
The Emerald Psychology Practice uses the HICAPS billing system to allow for a convenient and efficient payment process. Participants can receive their Medicare and Private Health Cover rebates immediately. Medicare and EFTPOS cards are required in order to process rebates. Medicare provides rebates for up to 10 group sessions per calendar in addition to the individual sessions.
